Xi'an was our first stop in China. We had flew to Shanghai from Japan and Xi'an from there. First of all, you must be warned that there are lots of muslim extremists in this area. Try not to draw attention to yourself in markets and streets by keeping your voice low. Be aware, this post is not intentionally targeting muslims. It is simply information for your safety. We didn't have any relatives in Xi'an so we stayed in a hotel. We went to see the Terracotta Warriors first (of course). I was excited to see them for the first time, but after seeing them and snapping a few photos, the excitement was gone. My parents got an english speaking tour guide, but I couldn't really comprehend because the guides there do not speak english very fluently. I would recommend not getting an english guide but exploring on your own instead. Other points of interest would be the Muslim Quarter, the Fortifications of Xi'an, and Mount Hua. These points will be explained more in the following posts.
